HOW TO BREAK GLASS WITH YOUR VOICE
Method 1 of 2: With Amplification
-
1
Put on safety goggles to protect your eyes when the glass shatters.
Shattering glass produces very small fragments that can cause permanent
damage to your eyes; this is nothing to mess around with.
-
2
Employ some kind of ear protection.
The amplifier will need to be turned up fairly loud in order for this
to work, so you need to protect your ears from potentially harmful sound
levels. Again, don't mess around with risking permanent damage.
-
3
Connect the amplifier to an AC power outlet and set it up with its speaker facing away from you. This sends the potentially harmful sound levels in a safer direction (like toward your neighbors, for example).
-
4
Place a crystal glass (see Tips) directly in front of the amplifier's speaker.
Look through the grille material of the amplifier to find the exact
location of the speaker (or one of the speakers if there's more than
one); using a flashlight can help with this.
-
5
Plug the microphone into the amplifier and place it as far away from the amplifier as the cable will allow.
- Place the microphone on a standard microphone stand if available; this allows you to sing hands-free and focus your energies.
- If the microphone has an on/off switch, turn it on now.
-
6
Walk over to the amplifier and turn it on.
Don't carry the microphone over to the amplifier when you do this, as
placing the microphone too near the amplifier will cause unpleasant and
potentially ear-damaging feedback; this is another good reason for using
a stand.
-
7
Turn the applicable volume controls on the amplifier to a relatively high level.
Turning the controls to about 50% is a good starting point; or if you
don't want to waste any time, set them at 75%. (But don't forget that
ear protection.)
-
8
Flick the glass with your fingertip and listen carefully to the ringing sound.
- You can also moisten your finger and rub the tip along the rim of the glass until it resonates audibly.
- The pitch you hear is the resonating frequency of the glass; if you
can duplicate this pitch with your voice loudly enough, you will cause
the glass to vibrate with increasing force until it shatters.
-
9
Still standing near the
glass and amplifier, keep tapping or vibrating the glass and begin
humming/singing to duplicate its pitch.
-
10
Go to the microphone and sing the matching pitch directly into it.
- Try singing with an "ah" vowel sound, opening your mouth as wide as possible.
- Take deep breaths and hold the note as long as you can.
- If the glass doesn't break at first, continue to breathe deeply and sing louder with each attempt.
- When you achieve the perfect combination of the exact pitch at the necessary loudness, the glass will shatter.
- If you're not successful at first and you started with the amplifier
at 50% volume, you can try increasing the volume gradually and
repeating the steps.
-
11
Dispose of the broken glass carefully.
Wear gloves when cleaning up to minimize cuts and scrapes, and examine
the area thoroughly to make sure you've picked up even the smallest
fragments. Use a vacuum cleaner to finish up.
Method 2 of 2: Without Amplification
-
1
Put on safety goggles to protect your eyes when the glass shatters.
Again, shattering glass produces very small glass fragments that can
cause permanent damage to your eyes; it'll spoil the fun if you break
the glass but ruin your eyesight.
-
2
Flick the glass with your fingertip and listen carefully to the ringing sound.
- You can also moisten your finger and rub the tip along the rim of the glass until it resonates audibly.
- The pitch you hear is the resonating frequency of the glass; if you
can duplicate this pitch with your voice loudly enough, you will cause
the glass to vibrate with increasing force until it shatters.
-
3
Place your mouth almost directly against the glass.
This is not mandatory, as a skilled singer can break a glass from
several inches away; but the closer you get, the more your vocal energy
will be focused on the glass.
-
4
Begin singing the matching pitch as loud as you can.
- Try singing with an "ah" vowel sound, opening your mouth as wide as possible.
- Take deep breaths and hold the note as long as you can.
- If the glass doesn't break at first, continue to breathe deeply and sing louder with each attempt.
